Shanks named Preferred Bidder for £560m Northern Ireland Waste Project

24 May 2013

Leading international sustainable waste management business, Shanks Group plc (“Shanks” or “the Group”), announces that its SBS Waste Partnership, with Brickkiln and Sisk (“the Partnership”), has been selected as Preferred Bidder by the North West Regional Waste Management Group for its 25 year residual waste treatment contract in Northern Ireland, worth an estimated £560 million.

Planning permission for the site has been approved and the project is now moving into the financing stage.

Under the terms of the contract, the partnership will manage up to a maximum of 140,000 tonnes of residual waste per annum. The waste will be processed by Mechanical Biological Treatment to extract recyclable material and produce a Solid Recovered Fuel which will then be used in a gasification facility to generate sustainable energy.

Peter Eglinton, UK Managing Director of Shanks, said:

“We are pleased to have been selected as Preferred Bidder, although much work remains to be done to deliver an appropriate solution for our customer. We look forward to working closely with the North West Regional Waste Management Group as we progress our plans.”
