Opened Summer 2015

Residents living in the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) council areas collectively produce around 340,000 tonnes or waste, nearly a tonne per household.

In 2011, the three councils selected 3SE to treat the 265,000 tonnes of waste that has not been separated for recycling (black bag refuse), thereby avoiding landfill. 3SE is a partnership between Shanks and SSE.

Shanks’ new facility, which opened in the Manvers area in March 2015, uses a tried and tested MBT technology to extract recyclable waste, and convert non recyclable waste into a solid fuel. The plant also includes a dry anaerobic digestion process, which converts organic matter into a renewable biogas.

The solid fuel is delivered to SSE’s Multi Fuel Power Station in West Yorkshire, powering the equivalent of 18,100 homes, and prevents the burning of 70,000 tonnes of fossil fuels. This will avoid 200,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere - the equivalent of taking 42,000 cars off the road.

The gas created by the AD facility is converted into electricity on-site, and reused within the process.
